The embankment of Tiga Dam in Northern Nigeria has been a subject of concern since its construction in 1978. Unusually heavy rains in 1988, and the ensuing failure of an adjacent similar smaller dam built around the same time, further increased safety fears. This paper summarises the investigations undertaken to assess the safety of the embankment, the findings, and describes the short term remedial works carried out by the client's direct work organisation. The further long term remedial works are outlined along with the economic justification.
