The historical evolution of the way society has viewed wetlands is described. Human adaption to wetlands has been superseded by exploitation in form of reclamation. Now the true costs of wetland destruction are being appreciated and the dominant paradigm of reclamation has been giving way to a paradigm of conservation. However, the dramatic loss in wetland area that already occurred and its impact at the local, regional and global scale has led new initiative for wetland restoration. Based on U.S. experience in the last years, the key components of successful wetland restoration programmes are summarized.
