The Rhine-Meuse Delta was enclosed in 1970 after the completion of the Haringvliet dam. Developments in morphology, water and sediment quality and biology are described. Ecological impacts of enclosure on the Delta, the river Rhine and the North Sea are summarized. Changes in socio-economic needs in the 1980's led to a reconsideration of the area's water management. Three management alternatives are compared and evaluated from an ecological point of view.
