This chapter will look at demolition in the wider context of partial demolition as well as the more commonly perceived whole demolition of a facility where perhaps the reader will have preconceived images of dramatic and spectacular reduction of buildings and other structures to piles of rubble – albeit these may be quite large piles of rubble! The latter is just one example of demolition and one where those show-piece events often, by their very nature, attract significant attention and publicity. Many benefits can arise from this approach as well as potential disbenefits, perhaps.
An essential feature of this chapter is that it provides an overview of many pertinent topics and gives some references for the reader to develop further their knowledge of these as they wish and require. This chapter looks at the meaning of demolition in its wider context as well as the more particular interpretation for some legal compliance. It includes demolition and partial demolition overview and some basic considerations. Meanings of words can vary in industry sectors and these will be mentioned to aid effective communication and help clarity.
