This chapter describes the considerations needed at the design stage to maximise the protection that can be achieved both by using suitable design methods and through appropriate materials measures. There is rarely a single means of achieving durability in a concrete structure. Design aspects may be effective in reducing the reliance on expensive or technically difficult materials measures or the need for a high quality of workmanship where it may not readily be available. This chapter attempts to provide an insight into the types of design measures that are available and how they should be targeted at the specific deterioration mechanisms identified in the exposure environment.
