Question – William Allsop: To my mind your presentation divided into material that is of general application and material that is only relevant to Catania. Am I correct in assuming that whilst your methodology is reasonably generic, anyone applying your approach to another structure has to go back into the laboratory and generate lots of response functions for the different options?

Answer – Martina Stagnitti: Yes, the problem is that nowadays there are few studies on upgrading structures. So, now we have to go into the lab. But if further studies and experimental investigations on upgraded breakwaters are performed, in the future we may have new specific design formulae similar to the ones we use for conventional structures. We need a bigger data set on these kinds of structures to avoid the supplemental campaign for every specific case.
