The Wadhurst Clay has received little attention in the geotechnical literature because of the rural nature of much of its outcrop. However, the spread of urbanization in Sussex has led to the investigation of a number of sloping sites in the Wadhurst Clay. Following a review of the geological setting, and geotechnical parameters of the Wadhurst Clay derived from these investigations, three case histories of slope failures which occurred during the very wet winter of 1987/88 are presented. A summary is provided of present knowledge of shear strength parameters, key factors in the observed failures and remedial works undertaken.
