The paper describes a translational slide that occurred in the Senise area (Basilicata, Southern Italy) within a sequence of Calabrian littoral deposits (Aliano Sand), consisting of slightly cemented sands and clay layers.
The basal slip surface of the landslide is coincident with a thin clay layer inclined at 16.
The principal cause of the failure was the severe unloading of the toe and the inadequacy of the retaining structure which consisted of contiguous bored piles.
The movement occurred two years after excavation, following heavy rain.
The investigation, carried out by geomorphological survey, boreholes, inclinometers, laboratory testing and the analysis of the damage to the retaining structure, provides an explanation for the occurrence of the landslide.
