The stability of a slope is dependant upon the shear strength mobilized on surfaces within the slide mass. The contribution to stability of this internal strength can only be assessed in terms of effective stress if the pore pressures within the slide are known and included in the analysis. This note examines the stability of an approximately circular slide in which the pore pressures were measured and shows that the peak strength of the soil within the slide mass was mobilized. The error caused by the use of incorrect interslice pore pressures is assessed.
