The scale and complexity of the landslide complex at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, dictate that conventional engineering solutions to the contemporary instability problems are unlikely to be cost-effective. However, there is a clear need for the local community to come to terms with the potential problems and learn to live with the landslide. To this end a number of strategies have been advanced which involve the participation of the whole community: the planning authority, developers, local builders, insurance companies, the statutory services and the general public.
