The Undercliff on the southern coast of the Isle of Wight forms an extensive ancient landslide complex upon which the town of Ventnor is situated. Historical and contemporary ground movements within the area have been recorded although the distribution, frequency and magnitude of events is difficult to reconstruct. Intermittent movements in urban Ventnor are generally slight although the cumulative damage to roads, buildings and services is considerable. The retrospective analysis of past movements was therefore an important task in the geomorphological assessment of contemporary landslide hazard and behaviour.
