Coastal Regression is a process generally controlled by instability following weathering due to marine environmental processes, one of the most aggressive environments. Predicting this instability depends on static analyses driven by a dynamic weathering process. Within this environment Trinity House are required to operate and replace facilities built many years ago. Routine inspection and instrumentation programmes have been developed in order to evaluate risk subject to taking further detailed action when appropriate. The relatively low cost of rebuilding further inland compared with coastal protection works is a key element of this decision making process. This paper highlights the background to the management of Trinity House facilities with examples.
