This paper describes the functions of a geotechnical team engaged on the stabilisation of natural and man made slopes. The use of an engineering database and an archive library of landslide incidents are illustrated and various design philosophies for corrective measures are explained. The relevance of the computed factor of safety and the public's perception of different corrective measures are reviewed. It is concluded that the success of schemes should be quantified in terms of the margin of stability achieved, design life and maintenance, cost and the confidence of the local community in the solution.
