There are many reasons for post-strengthening of reinforced concrete structures, such as serviceability improvements, increased traffic volumes on bridges, steel reinforcement corrosion, decrease in deformation etc. Strengthening structures by means of bonding steel plates with adhesives has become standard engineering practice since 1967. Steel can be replaced by the light-weight and non-corrosive CFRP-material. General construction authorisation was given to the product Sika CarboDur CFRP strips by the German Institute of Construction Technology. The strips are so far used in non-prestressed condition. In order to improve the serviceability of strengthened structures a site-suitable system has been developed by Leonhardt, Andra and Partners which allows to apply the CFRP strips in prestressed condition. The worldwide first practical application of posttensioned externally bonded CFRP strips (LEOBA-CarboDur surface-tendon) was carried out successfully in October 1998.
