BNFL,as part of the Nuclear Fuel cycle, have a requirement to store large quantities of material which require cooling. Where the coolant demand is high, BNFL have used large storage ponds where water is allowed to circulate around the material. It can be seen then that there is a requirement for fuel storage ponds to demonstrate high degrees of containment. Two independent containment systems are used to prevent any escape to the environment.
