This paper examines the deformation behaviour when an elastic steel projectile is impacted against a deformable cylindrical test specimen placed on an elastic anvil. The response was simulated using a PC based finite difference numerical technique. Three different materials were tested. The variation of force, strain and strain rate with time of the specimens are presented. The force-time history in the projectile and the anvil are also presented and discussed. The theoretical and experimental results are compared in terms of the final dimensions of the cylindrical test specimen.
