Chapter 6 sets out the underlying principles that need to be considered when selecting appropriate tools to guide the building designer. This appendix provides a list of key methods currently in general use and maps them against the sustainability principles set out in the companion volume in this series (Ainger and Fenner, 2014).

The list is, however, far from being complete, as there are many tools available from a wide variety of sources, including many specialist and commercially focused tools. Many of these may be well developed and credible, although others may not be. Some may be biased towards specific design or specification solutions.
