This chapter discusses the integration of health and safety into the design life cycle of a construction project and promotes early consideration of the fundamental health and safety issues relating to the use, buildability, cleaning and maintaining of the asset. The approach promotes that health and safety is considered as an integral part of the project design and decision-making process and is carried out in a systematic, structured and timely manner tailored to the context of the construction environment. To improve the effectiveness of the approach, the overall framework needs to have leadership, the credibility to secure workforce commitment, and be dynamic, interactive and responsive to change.
