This chapter concentrates on falsework. It is not a technical design guide. Instead it outlines the special characteristics that differentiate falsework from permanent works and the responsibilities of designers, as well as highlighting key aspects of the management of falsework, such that safety risk is mitigated. Potential ill health effects arising from the design or use of falsework are no different from other forms of construction.

Falsework is usually provided on a temporary basis and removed from site after use. However, occasionally some falsework components may become part of the permanent works on completion.
