Temporary traffic management or TTM is essentially a system of traffic signs and equipment used in a way that guides people and vehicles safely past a construction site or other situation on the carriageway. The TTM may be required as a result of a planned closure or partial closure of a road or an emergency situation; it may be in place for a short time; a few hours, or over a prolonged period; several days or weeks.

The two documents Safety at Street Works and Road Works – A Code of Practice (The Safety Code) and chapter 8 of Traffic Signs Manual – Traffic Safety Measures and Signs for Road Works and Temporary Situations (often referred to as Chapter 8) deal with the identification, design and operation of suitable TTM schemes for particular situations.
