Brillouin spectrum analysers were described in Part A. This chapter focuses first on the passive components of a distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) system. These consist of fibre optic (FO) cables and the hardware used to connect cables together or to instruments. Particular attention is given to the procedure of fusion splicing and the equipment associated with it. Then it describes the standard telecommunication equipment that can be used to test the integrity and the quality of DFOS installations. It is important to note that the guidelines provided do not follow stringent telecommunication standards but merely provide a framework for rapid testing of a DFOS system installation within a civil engineering context and within the constraints associated with it. Considerations of health and safety matters associated with the use of optical fibres and equipment are covered in Chapter 4 (section 4.4).
