The purpose of this chapter is to provide a hands-on guide to adaptation principles with regard to conversion and refurbishment projects. The chapter draws on adaptation principles and health and safety and other relevant legislation. It takes the approach of offering accessible and simple examples.
Guidance is given on good practice and the management of adaptation projects from the perspectives of sustainability, space planning and environment. In addition, advice is given on structural loading, thermal performance and health and safety management in the design process.
The chapter draws on environmental sustainability, life-cycle analysis and adaptation of procurement pathways and methods. Limited advice is also provided on how to manage the works. The specification of adaptation works may be considered as an option for extending the life of a building, rather than demolishing or decommissioning the asset. This is an environmentally sustainable strategy. Building adaptation in terms of conversion, refurbishment and adaptation principles is examined. Health and safety and other legislation relevant to renovation and adaptation works are discussed.
