This chapter examines how regulation of autonomous vehicles may impact on their use and adoption, the benefits and disbenefits of governments promoting their take-up, their possible impact on urban and transport planning and on social inclusion, how government could provide a lead to nurture and guide the progress to a new mobility future and how pricing may be used as a way to manage some of the potential negative impacts. Finally, Section 12.8 presents a case study from Japan, introduces the contents of the Public–Private ITS Initiative/Roadmaps 2018 and discusses public perception on automated driving systems in Japan, in particular, the roles that public and private stakeholders play and how the socioeconomic and institutional issues of automated driving systems are dealt with.
