This chapter examines the more important issues relating to the use of asphalt materials in pavement construction and maintenance, and also provides some background information. It is, effectively, a link to Chapter 17, which examines a conceptual range of possible maintenance options (which – while enhancing the ride – do not have any significant effect on the bearing capacity of the pavement) and also considers the options for enhancing the bearing capacity of the pavement. In this chapter several considerations are explored that are relevant to both the maintenance and strengthening of pavements. The reader will, hopefully, find information that is not usually dealt with in a single text elsewhere.
