BS EN 10025-6:2019

Quenched and tempered steels are steels that have been heated to temperatures around 900°C and rapidly cooled (quenched). At this stage, the resulting material is both hard and brittle. To combat this, the steel is reheated to around 600°C and gradually cooled (tempered) to achieve the desired mechanical properties. Quenched and tempered steels are specialist materials requiring a higher standard of welding procedure.

BS EN 10025-6:2019 applies to quenched and tempered flat products only. All materials described are high-strength, with minimum yield strengths of 460 N/mm2 or greater.

Values for maximum CEVs are given for nominal product thicknesses ⩽50 mm.
