The work involved in supporting existing façades or party walls for renovation, during rebuilding or after damage is a specific type of temporary works with different risks, durations and types of loads than the temporary structures of falsework and scaffolding. Although similar equipment is used, the philosophy, procedures and relationship to the permanent works are different. Unlike formwork and falsework, the structure to be supported already exists; it may be old, in poor condition or not vertical. Procedures will need to reflect the status, stressing the importance of initial surveys and possible extensive monitoring during use to reduce the risks. Permanent works designers have an important role in the management and control of façade retention schemes.
