This chapter sets out the different ways in which rainfall can be measured, and how these rainfall measurements can be used to estimate the spatial and temporal pattern of rainfall over an urban catchment. It explains the different concepts of rainfall estimation, rainfall prediction, design rainfall, and how these may be affected by climate change. Brief examples highlight how these different rainfall concepts are used in the simulation and prediction of flows in urban drainage systems, as well as the design of urban drainage systems.
