In a previous paper an evaluation of the condition of St. John's and St. Mary's multi-storey car parks was presented, together with an outline of the remedial options put forward to the Client, Colchester Borough Council. Subsequently, remedial works were undertaken to the first car park, St. John's, using a combination of patch repairs, Fosroc Galvashield® CC sacrificial anode units and a decking membrane system. A similar regime was recommended for the second car park, St. Mary's. However, repair of the first car park caused significant noise nuisance, as the holes were drilled for the Fosroc anodes, and there was concern that using this method of repair might sever the tendons in the car park. As a result, we were asked to undertake an evaluation of surface applied corrosion inhibitors, as a trial, in small selected areas and to determine whether these were effective in arresting or reducing the corrosion of the steel reinforcement. Evaluation of the results was conducted using a combination of half cell potential testing, linear polarisation resistance and galvanostatic pulse monitoring.
