The British Tunnelling Society is in the process of producing a Tunnel Lining Design Guide as there has never been a single document in which sets down the process to be followed. Neither are their any British Standards or Codes of Practice that deal specifically with the requirements of tunnel design and the strict application of other structural codes such as BS 8110 is not appropriate in some cases. This is generally overcome by the Code allowance to follow tried and tested , or experimentally proven practice and it is the intention of the Design Guide to set down that proven practice and make recommendations on the methods of design and analysis appropriate to tunnel design in the UK.
