In this chapter, the authors review and analyze international literature on approaches to teacher education for global citizenship education (GCE). Drawing on studies from several parts of the world, we examine different discourses shaping conceptions and practices of GCE and the implications for equipping teachers with the capacities to understand and teach significant global issues in classroom practice. We highlight the challenges teacher educators face in preparing teachers for GCE and suggest new directions for GCE-based teacher education. The chapter concludes by offering a situated vision of teacher education for GCE that might promote a shared conceptual focus across contexts along with a body of practices and competencies that will help researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders advance the field of teacher education for GCE.
