At a time when the support provided by traditional structures and institutions has declined, the workplace has emerged as the primary arena for finding personal identity, making a contribution, and connecting with others. Although work plays a central role in our lives, it is important to keep work in a proper perspective. In this chapter, I discuss work from a biblical perspective and argue that work is a gift from God designed to provide meaning and purpose. As such work has intrinsic value, as well as instrumental value as the means for earning a living and supporting our families. The inherent meaningfulness of work is further enhanced when work is reframed as an act of worship.
