For the contemporary American, being able to attend to a task has become increasingly difficult. The consequences for this lack of attention in one’s personal life may go unnoticed, but in the workplace the measurable negative impacts are evident. For example, in hospitals six types of distraction arising from use of smartphones are noted to disturb a patient’s clinical care (McBride, 2015). Or within engineering and construction firms the lack of attentiveness due to distraction has measureable impacts on risk perception which ultimately leads to injury (Namian et al., 2018). The worker distracted by social media and like forms of cyber entertainment has become so common that it has its own name, cyberloɑfing (Jia, 2008).
