First page of Manifesting Justice<subtitle>Transforming Education Toward Beloved Community</subtitle>

Education is a fundamental human right, civil right, and political right. Education is essential to all economic, social, and cultural rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a milestone document in the history of human rights that was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 and has been translated into over 500 languages (United Nations, 2021). The first article of the UDHR states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” (United Nations, 2021, para. 1). Unfortunately, across the globe human rights violations persist including unequal educational access and opportunities. In the United States, systemic forms of oppression surge across the educational landscape, perpetuating social inequalities, creating barriers for millions of children and youth, and adversely impacting precious lives and communities. It is imperative to unpack, disrupt, and dismantle systemic and structural issues that limit the promise of education. Advancing social and environmental justice calls on us to collectively re-envision and transform education to be culturally affirming and inclusive environments that enable progress for democracy and human dignity. In a world full of deep fractions and growing disparities, collective effort and care are needed to ensure all children and youth have opportunities, resources, and support to not just survive but to thrive. We must re-envision and transform education for racial and economic justice, and move toward what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. described as the beloved community.Baldwin (1991) reminds us that Dr. King’s “life, thought, vision, and efforts … translate the ethical idea of the beloved community into practical reality” (p. 337). As educators, we have the opportunity to be co-conspirators for justice. We can intentionally choose to embody and grow beloved community in contemplative gardens of praxis, transforming hopeful theory into hopeful action. Together, we can paint inclusive, healing, and liberating educational landscapes as a manifestation of beloved community anchored in social and environmental justice for all.
