This chapter features musings of a first-generation graduate student on their journey to doctoral candidacy. In order to become a “PhD” one must pass through writing milestones which serve as rites of passage. Rites are culturally-bound and context specific, meaning first-generation graduate students must be socialized to these practices. Inclusive writing centers, writing groups, and teaching and learning centers can be supportive educational spaces for first-generation graduate students. These spaces can familiarize students with the practices, habits, and skills necessary for a successful passage through doctoral education.
