In February 2015, I met with Dr. Lounsbury to discuss the newsletter for the Georgia Middle School Association, now the Georgia Association for Middle Level Education. He had invited me to visit him in his office at Georgia College in Milledgeville. Nancy Mizelle, and Joanne Previts, faculty members at Georgia College, also met with us that day. Dr. Lounsbury reviewed ideas on the overall progress of middle level education, shared his enthusiasm for this age group, and commented on some of the terms that had been used to describe early adolescence over the past decades. In a few impromptu minutes, he distilled concepts about education for young adolescents and gave a grand tour of main ideas in middle level education. It was remarkable to hear about the field from Dr. Lounsbury, who could speak with first-person pronouns about the history and importance of middle schools.
