The summer before my freshman year of high school, I took part in a group called Girls Taking Action at the Russell Youth Center in West Cambridge. The group met 4 days a week and had Mondays off. Girls Taking Action brought together approximately 14 girls from different ethnic backgrounds, to discuss the obstacles facing women—particularly women of color. In the program, we would do activities and group discussions about what women should do to stand up for themselves. My teachers recommended me for the program because they saw how engaged I was with learning about racism and sexism. Girls Taking Action supports young women like me to be heard and valued by society.
