The assessment of landslide hazard at Ventnor has necessitated the development of a new method for assessing the ground behaviour of an existing landslide complex. The method includes a thorough review of available records, detailed geomorphological mapping, land use, geological and damage surveys, the assessment of past movement rates and a model of the mechanisms and causes of landsliding. This paper describes the methods used to produce a map of ground behaviour, which has been based on the past distribution of landslide events, measured movement rates and the nature and intensity of structural damage within separate geomorphological units.
