Effective management has reduced economic and social losses due to slope failure in the United States by avoiding the hazards or by reducing the damage potential. This is achieved primarily by four mitigative approaches: (a) restriction of development in landslide-prone areas; (b) excavating, grading, landscaping, and construction codes, (c) use of physical measures to prevent or control landslides, and (d) landslide warning systems.
