The paper describes the results of work that was carried out on some of the properties of foamed concrete. A reasonable amount of work has been reported on the hardened properties, but the literature contains less on the properties of the wet or plastic material. These properties and particularly their time dependence are of particular relevance to the ready-mix producer. The initial programme of work described here aimed to characterise the wet properties of the material and to investigate the major factors affecting the production of the entrained air that is a major constituent of this product. In phase two of the research programme, factors affecting the amount, type and stability of the entrained air were then investigated.
