Nowadays, mankind understands the need to maintain the earth's environment and protect human health and safety. They are urgent objects that must be realized for a sustainable society. Although construction activities create useful and pleasant living spaces, they cannot avoid some destruction of the earth's environment. Against the background of the global problems, activities for protection of the environment, including waste management are being positively promoted in Japan's construction industry field. In this paper, present measures to reduce waste in this sector are described. They include Japanese government policy regarding waste management, the present construction waste condition, strategies of Japan's private construction sector and development of new construction methods that take waste reduction into consideration.
