Highways Department conducted an international design competition for Stonecutters Bridge. The competition attracted renowned bridge designers from all over the world to submit a variety of proposals. These proposals contained many innovative ideas and imaginative concepts. Different bridge forms, pylon shapes, cable and deck arrangements were proposed by the competitors. The designs expressed the aesthetic qualities in the perception of both the road users as well as observers from different locations in the harbour and the city. Some of the competitors explained in detail the themes of their designs in the competition entries. This paper first describes the aesthetic evaluation criteria adopted in the assessment of competition entries. It then describes the aesthetic design evolution process of those Stage 2 entries and how the major comments given by the judges in Stage 1 were addressed in the Stage 2 submissions.
