DALLAS, John Edwin (1855–1938) railway engineer, was born on 17 January 1855 in London, the son of John Peter Grant Dallas. Educated at Rugby School and Coopers Hill College (1873–1876) he obtained practical training at **Easton & **Anderson engineering works before joining the Indian PWD as an Assistant Engineer. He was attached to the Railway Branch, and began work on surveying the Nagpur & Chattisgurh railway. Work followed on setting out and the construction of the Dhond & Manmád State Railway. He then became personal assistant to Alexander ***Izat, Engineer in Chief of the Kattiawar State Railway. It was in that capacity that he was elected AMInstCE in May 1881. Promoted Executive Engineer in 1889 he became acting Under Secretary for the Government of Bombay Railway Branch in 1893. He was transferred to Assam in 1895 and returned to Calcutta as the junior consulting engineer for railways in 1900. Further promoted Superintending Engineer in 1904 he was posted to Burma as acting consulting engineer for railways, and confirmed in post in 1907. In 1908 he became Senior Government Inspector for Railways. He retired in 1910 and became a Managing Director of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. He married Letitia Clarke in India in 1887. He died on 9 November 1938 in Upper Norwood, London, leaving an estate of £1,375.
