My intention in writing this book was to update the first edition, which was published in 2002. Many things have changed since then, not least the attitudes of people in general to public transport. However, in many ways the situation is still one where new thinking can be adopted to bring such changed attitudes as there are into reality. So a second intention was to write down the ways in which my own thinking has progressed over the past decade or so. This is not to say that my current thinking is the only way to do things or even that it is correct – the way to look at this book is as a stimulus to what could be done if some of the old ways of thinking about the bus system were set aside and a fresh start were made. The real transformation here is in thinking that it might be possible to transform the world using the bus system as the agent of change. Buses are everywhere, close to us in our cities, and thus making a small change can have a huge impact.
