Working adjacent to water can be a very pleasant working environment for construction; however, it could be easy to overlook some of the unique hazards that are present. With some, though, the risks associated with these hazards can be easily identified and can therefore be designed out, controlled or managed in such a way as to minimise exposure. This approach will therefore result in a safe working environment.
Water itself seems relatively benign and this can lead to complacency when it is present on a construction site. The following sections will detail some of the risks and provide guidance on mitigation measures that can be put in place to manage the situation. In addition, consideration will also be given to the more hazardous situation of flood emergency and the risks that are present during such an event.
