With understanding of global climate impacts improving, it is becoming clear that climate change will have significant negative impact on the functioning of many coastal ecosystems (Stern 2007). These ecosystems support a large proportion of the world’s poor (Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) 2005; Coulthard et al. 2011). Of these coastal populations, it is often the poorest communities that are in the worst position to adapt to changes in their environment and livelihoods (IPCC, 2007).
Climate compatible development is defined as development that minimises the harm caused by climate change impacts, while maximising the many human development opportunities presented by a low emissions, more resilient, future (Mitchell & Maxwell 2010).
