The benefits of blue-green infrastructure (BGI) can only be achieved through well planned, effective stewardship, management and maintenance. This chapter sets out the fundamental concepts by first explaining the organisational culture, policies, skills and resources required, which are necessary to achieve the expected benefits of BGI. Detail is then provided on planning, from establishment to long-term management of BGI assets. The digital systems and data, which play an increasingly important role in planning and analysing the results of BGI management and maintenance, are then described. Guidance is provided on establishing maintenance objectives and engagement of stakeholders, including the public; this is essential to effective delivery and monitoring to achieve wider sustainability benefits. Maintenance management plans (MMPs) are important documents, which provide the framework for securing funding and support. The structure and contents of MMPs are described with reference to relevant industry standards and best practice.
