This chapter examines why, what, who and how temporary works and the interface between the Permanent Works and Temporary Works Designers are managed and controlled. The importance of the principal contractor (PC), the independence of the PC's Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) and the support upon which the PC's TWC depends, including the PC's designated individual (DI), the construction team and other organisations involved in the construction project, are discussed. The categories of design check required to ensure that the temporary works can be constructed and can perform their function of ensuring the permanent works are not overstressed (during construction or demolition) and protecting the public and/or the site team (including the operatives) from errors, omissions, misunderstandings and perhaps even the pressures of contract, programme and cost are reviewed.
