The Lyme Regis Environmental Improvements project is one of most complex coastal projects being undertaken in the UK. The works are designed to protect the town by stabilising landslides without negatively impacting on the important geological and environmental characteristics of the area. The Paper describes the background to the works, the elements that make up the works - which include a new seawall, rock armour, soil nailing, dowel piles and large diameter bored piles - and some of the challenges that were encountered during the design process, particularly focussing on the new seawall and foreshore works, the investigations that were undertaken to support the design and safety considerations.
