My son, Lee, came home from school today. A new semester. A fresh start. He told me yesterday that he liked his classes but that they would be hard. I do my motherly check in, “So, still like your classes?”

“I don’t know. Today ... ”

He then began telling me about an activity in his sports focused social studies class. He showed me a belief inventory that students were to fill out regarding their attitudes about athletes and professional sports. Near the bottom of the first page I saw the statement, “Some races are better at sports than others.” I knew then what kind of day he had likely experienced.
