Steven Camicia’s Critical Democratic Education and LGBTQ-Inclusive Curriculum: Opportunities and Constraints challenges schools, curriculum, and communities to become more inclusive and critically democratic for students. He gives specific emphasis for the promotion of inclusivity and recognition for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transsexual, and Queer (LBGTQ) identifying students who have been historically disenfranchised and ostracized by the educational system. Camicia guides his readers through complex philosophical and theoretical paradigms in order to create a space where educators and policymakers may “recognize” (p. 66) the need of inclusive education in the pursuit of a critically democratic society. He examines the roles that culture, politics, and communities play in the development of the internal and external exclusionary measures that favor the dominant heteronormative values.
